The amount of memory a computer has determines how many things it can "do at once".
If you have 1 Gigabyte of memory installed, Windows Vista will often use about 80% of that just to start up.
For normal use, Windows XP works best with at least 1 gigabyte of memory. Vista and Windows 7 require at least 2 gigabytes.
