Sometimes we come across settings or situations that are a little... weird.
If it got us stumped, there's a good chance someone else may hit the same snag as well.

How I fixed my iPhone 3G lag Print
Monday, 28 June 2010 16:18

It seemed that after every Apple firmware upgrade, my phone became more laggy and unresponsive.

I tried all sorts of fixes - disable Push and Notifications, removing all the music and videos - all to no avail.

Clicking sleep/wake would take 8 seconds for the phone to respond, and I could type 10 characters on the keyboard before anything would appear.

However, I found the solution to be something quite simple - so I've posted the information here so Google can find it and hopefully help someone else!

Symantec Backup Exec 10d error with Blackberry Server Print
Tuesday, 16 February 2010 13:54

A client has Microsoft Small Business Server 2003, which is running Blackberry Professional Software (a limited user version of Blackberry Enterprise Server).

They use Symantec Backup Exec 10d for their backups.

The problem:

Backup Exec would fail with the error:

"V-79-57344-33938 - An error occurred on a query to database BESMgmt.
The item SERVERNAME\BLACKBERRY\BESMgmt in use - skipped.
Final error: 0xe0008492 - Database Query Failure. See the job log for details."

Root cause:

I spent a couple of hours digging in to this - investigating the usual issues of account access and permissions.

However, it turns out there's a bug in the SQL tool used by Blackberry to create the database - it puts an extra backslash in the table's location.

iPhone photos not showing in Windows Print
Tuesday, 12 January 2010 21:22

When you connect an iPhone to a Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 computer using a USB cable, the computer recognises the phone as a type of camera.

You can then browse the Camera Roll stored on the phone.

However, every so often Windows reports that the "camera" is empty - and when you browse the phone's directories using Windows Explorer, you find nothing there!

The Solution

It turns out, the solution in this case was pretty simple - Windows will show the phone as empty if the iPhone's screen is locked.

All you have to do - make sure the screen isn't locked with a PIN before you connect it to the computer.

Microsoft Windows Update problem with Powerpoint 2007 KB982158 Print
Monday, 01 November 2010 00:06

I'm posting this as it was a rather odd solution to a rather odd problem!

A user has a Windows XP system with Office 2003 installed.

Automatic Updates were set to run in the background.

However, their computer was displaying an error message when installing the Powerpoint 2007 KB982158 update (even though they hadn't got Office 2007 installed).

All the usual tricks (such as deleting the WIndows Update directories and trying to install it manually) didn't work.

The solution

Download and install the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack from Microsoft. This allows Office 2003 to open Office 2007 files. Once this was installed, it also allowed KB982158 to run without a problem!
